Goals
Short term:
- Provide acute care for basic health issues within the communities we surveyed in the summer of 2008.
- Start providing chronic care for patients with diabetes and hypertension through 6 months supplies of medications and education.
- Continue building our relationships with the communities of Siete de Abril and Monte de Olivios.
- Expand interdisciplinary participation of OSU students in the project.
- Research and develop an appropriate programmatic response to chronic malnutrition in the communities that we serve.
- Train lay health care workers that can manage chronic conditions in the absence of health care providers
Long term:
- Establish a long-term partnership between OSU and the communities in and around El Progreso, Honduras.
- Provide a productive service learning environment for Ohio State professional students and faculty
- Collaborate with other health professionals to provide dental, optometric, nursing, and public health care.
- Create programs with the goal of sustainability, patient empowerment and preventative medicine.
- Build a clinic structure that can be supplied, staffed, and supported year round.
